Social Responsibility In Design.
Social responsibility in the design community has been part of my thoughts while I am looking for a new job. I did a googe search on just those words, and I have collected notes on what various branches of design see as their responsibility to social issues.
Industrial design is mostly concerned with green manufacturing;
Architecture concerns itself with the quality of housing;
Graphic design has a concern of the proliferation of consumer waste and, similar to advertising, sees the content of the designed message contains implicit assumptions promoting unsustainable consumption;
Advertising, by its nature, is the foundation of capitalist economic dogma;
HCI community has been largely concerned with maintiaining access to the web for everyone.
The most relevant quote for me comes from the First Things First Manefesto:
"There are pursuits more worthy of our problem-solving skills. Unprecedented environmental, social and cultural crises demand our attention. Many cultural interventions, social marketing campaigns, books, magazines, exhibitions, educational tools, television programs, films, charitable causes and other information design projects urgently require our expertise and help."
